The hangry joe's Story

Hangry Joe's was born in 2018 out of a single, burning obsession: hot chicken done right. Founders Joe and Maria Castillo had spent years craving the kind of Nashville-style heat they grew up eating on road trips — bold, unapologetic, and dangerously addictive. When they couldn't find it in Livonia, MI, they decided to build it themselves.

What started as a weekend pop-up in a church parking lot quickly became a line stretching around the block. Today, hangry joes serves hundreds of hungry guests every week from our brick-and-mortar on Plymouth Rd — still using Joe's original spice blend, still hand-breading every piece, still cooking with the same obsessive care that started it all.

The Beginning

Pop-Up in a Parking Lot

Joe and Maria Castillo launch the very first Hangry Joe's as a weekend pop-up outside a Livonia church. Lines form within the first hour. The original spice blend is born.

2018
Going Brick & Mortar

First Restaurant Opens

After 12 months of sold-out pop-ups and relentless community demand, Hangry Joe's opens its first brick-and-mortar location at 29515 Plymouth Rd, Livonia, MI.

2019
Adapting & Growing

Online Ordering Launched

Hangry Joe's pivots quickly, launching online ordering and curbside pickup. The menu expands to include tenders, sandwiches, and signature sides — all hangry joe's hot chicken favorites.

Recognition

Best Hot Chicken — Detroit Metro

Hangry Joe's is voted "Best Hot Chicken in the Detroit Metro Area" by Detroit Food Weekly. The waitlist for Saturday dinner hits 2 hours for the first time.
